The Mothers’ Union

Our April meeting was held in All Saints Church. A service in which the vicar enrolled two new members was attended by visitors and follwed by a celebration tea and refreshments. Mrs Betty Page a trustee of the Mothers’ Union gave us a talk on how Mary Sumner started the Mothers’ Union and how it developed. The vicar elaborated on this as he had lived and worked around Old Alresford near Winchester.

Jill Pudwell reported on the Dopcesan Conference held in Canterbury. Mr Reg Bailey. Mothers’ Union Chief Executive had talked about the world fellowship today and his experience visiting Mothers’ Union projects and branches throughout the world, including Great Britain. There are three million members worldwide in seventy one countries and three hunfred workers. India is hoping to join again with its vast population. Many of these members are in undeleoped countries where many worthwhile projects and worshipping God is a very joyful and practical experience. Much work in prisons and with needy families is carried out in Great Britain. A very enthusiastic young woman, Clare from Mary Sumner House, talked about marketing the Mothers’ Union and how much influence the movement has with government, the third world debt petition handed to the Queen recently contained more Mothers’ Union signatures than any other group.

An interesting letter from Pat and Bill Corke was read. They are settling well in their new Wiltshire village. Pat goes to church and has joined the village big Mothers’ Union Group.

Anyone who upholds the principles of the Mothers’ Union - a belief in Christian family life would be most welcome to our Mothers’ Union, man or woman!
